Episode 025 - Rob Hann

Rob Hann is a photographer based in New York City. We talked about his upbringing on his family's farm in Salisbury, England. He told me about his move to London, and his work there on a fire brigade. He also made some cross country trips in America where he worked many jobs. He spent time as a fashion model and travelled the world. He then pursued a life behind the camera, and has made his living as a photographer ever since. He has been living quite an interesting life, and it was great to meet him and talk with him about it. He truly lives for his art, and I admire that. Rob's website  (http://www.robhann.com/) includes many examples of his work. I personally love how the bright blue sky contrasts the sometimes decaying images that act as his subjects. Rob has a way of taking decaying cars and abandoned service stations and turning them into objects of beauty. There is an amazing sense of texture in his work, and it really makes his pictures come alive. Rob can be found selling his prints in SoHo on Prince St between Greene and Wooster. I am looking forward to meeting him in person on my next trip to NYC. If you see him first, tell him Matt sent you!

Episode 024 - Adam Hynes The Narrows

I recently chatted with Adam Hynes. He is the guitarist and producer of the UK band The Narrows. We talked about their new single "Able Danger" as well as the bands previous recordings. Adam told me about how he joined the band. We also talked through his influences, and the Manchester music scene. The Narrows are building up quite a following since they got together, and I can see why. I prepared for our conversation by checking out everything I could find about them online. There are so many fantastic videos of their performances, and I told Adam how much I enjoyed the one where they are playing on a rooftop at dusk. These guys have such amazing harmonies, and that intimate setting really allowed their voices to be the focus. I also wanted to get his perspective on how 9/11 changed the world. We talked about that and the recent riots in the UK. I really enjoyed this conversation and getting to know Adam. The Narrows are a band to watch. I am looking forward to the full album. You can visit The Narrows at http://www.thenarrows.bandcamp.com

Episode 023 - Bernie Worrell

**I cleaned up the audio on this interview and posted it as Episode 274 (http://artistconnectionpodcast.libsyn.com/episode-274-bernie-worrell) Please check it out!**

I had the rare opportunity to sit down with Bernie Worrell for lunch and some great conversation. The place was very crowded, but the background noise does not take away from the fact that I was talking to a living legend. I had been looking forward to this interview for weeks, and Bernie was everything I expected him to be. This man has spent close to 65 years in the music business and is still going strong. We touched on many topics. He shared some of his earliest memories as a child prodigy, college, and eventually taking all he learned to create a musical language that is all his own. We talked about his groundbreaking work in Parliament/Funkadelic, Talking Heads, and his solo work. He was very gracious and humble, and has so many stories and experiences. Please visit Bernie at his website http://www.bernieworrell.com/, and let me know what you think of the interview!

Episode 022 - Rob Williamson

Rob Williamson is an Austin TX based drummer. I first met him back in July when he and the Eric Tessmer Band came to town. I had the opportunity to interview the whole band that day, and I was eager catch up with Rob to see how the rest of the tour went. We talked about life in the van, and how Rob likes to stop at local record stores and search for rare vinyl. As you know, that is one of my favorite topics. As soon as his most recent tour ended tour ended, Rob was back on a plane to Los Angeles for recording dates. In addition to playing with Eric, Rob is also the drummer for Street Light Suzie and Hyde Park Showdown. While in LA, he had the chance to meet and spend time with Gilby Clarke. Rob is a great guy and a devoted musician. Reach out to him after you listen, and let him know what you think!

Episode 021 - Ryan Beattie Himalayan Bear

Ryan Beattie recently released the latest Himalayan Bear album called "Hard Times". I had the opportunity to speak with him on the eve of his latest tour. Ryan has a self described "fetish for reverb". I told him how much I appreciate what that does to the overall vocal sound of "Hard Times". He told me about recording a majority of the album at The Last Resort and how that it added to the feel of the record. We also talked about his influences, and the music scene in his hometown of Victoria BC. Ryan also started the critically acclaimed band Chet, and he plays guitar in Frog Eyes. You can visit Ryan at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Himalayan-Bear/155690741109397 and catch him on tour. Please check out the new album, as well!

Episode 020 - Steve Lemak

I have something fun and a little different for Episode 020. Steve Lemak is the owner of The Quillian located in Allentown PA. He has been my tattoo artist of choice for six years. He does amazing work and he is great to be around. These are important traits to consider when looking for someone to permanently alter your appearance, and Steve delivers. He and I clicked from our first meeting. Some of my appointments with him have lasted over 3 hours at a time, and he always keeps the conversation flowing. He has opinions on music, politics, history, books...the list goes on and on. I couldn't wait to have him as a guest. We met while he was doing a chest piece on Justin, who is one of his other long time customers. Justin was very cool, and I was thankful that he was willing to share his time with me. Steve and I cover a lot of ground during this interview. You will learn about his background, the importance that he places on a clean environment at the shop, and how he got his start in the business. Here is a glimpse into what a tattoo appointment sounds like in a world class shop.  *Pain not included   Please visit Steve online at http://www.thequillian.com/. Enjoy!!!!

Episode 019 - Chad Matheny Emperor X

I had an opportunity to talk with Chad Matheny as he was preparing to release his latest Emperor X album "Western Teleport". We talked about how happy he is to be working with Bar/None Records, and his preparation for his upcoming tour. Chad has spent a majority of his time as a working musician out on the road. He told me that this tour will take him within 50 miles of anyone that wants to see him, and I am no exception.  He will make a stop in my town at the end of October. We talked about his upbringing on the East Coast, and how he left his teaching job to pursue his life in music. Western Teleport is also being made available on vinyl. I told Chad how much I appreciate that. He is also planting Western Teleport Nodes in the cities that he will visit, and he gives his fans clues on where to find.  When they are found, they are registered online. This makes unreleased music available to everyone. This is just one example of how Chad makes the experience interactive for his fans. Please visit Chad at http://emperorx.tumblr.com/, and pick up a copy of Western Teleport.  Enjoy!

Episode 018 - Arrica Rose

I really enjoyed my recent interview with Arrica Rose. I spent the week leading up to our conversation listening to her new album "Let Alone Sea" and I couldn't wait to talk to her about it. The songs have so many layers, and her incredible voice ties them all together. She concludes the album with a mash up of "Video Killed the Radio Star/Wonderful World". We talked about how lyrics of many pop songs really tell a tragic story, but you really don't notice until you strip away some of the original production. Arrica has a way of choosing just the right song to cover on her albums, and make them her own. We also talked about her background, influences, and the state of the music business.  She also told me about the non profit she founded called "I Heart Inc". It is artist operated and raises money for charitable programs and organizations through creative projects and events.  Learn more at http://www.iheartinc.com. Please listen to my interview with her, and check out her website http://www.arricarose.com. Please let us know what you think!
