Episode 017 - Mike Watt

You read that right, gang!  I made a phone call to legendary musician and all around great guy Mike Watt. Mike co-founded the bands Minutemen, dos, and Firehose to name just a few. He shared many stories about the early days, D. Boon, and life in San Pedro.  We also talked about what it's like out on the road, and the current music scene. Mike stays very active and is involved in many projects.  He is an inspiration to many musicians, including myself. I told him about my teenage memory of a Saturday morning in a dusty record store buying the Minutemen album "Double Nickels on the Dime" and Husker Du's "Zen Arcade". Mike told me that "Zen Arcade" is what inspired them to make "Double Nickels" a double album. He also shared the meaning of the title. Please visit Mike at his website www.mikewatt.com for photos, tour dates, and to purchase his music including his latest "hyphenated-man".  Enjoy! Episode 015 - Sharon Clancy The Amplifires

Sharon is the singer with the UK band The Amplifires. We recently had a very cool Sunday morning phone conversation, and I am eager to share it with you.  Sharon and I are the same age and have a lot in common.  We talked through the similarities of our home towns, and some of the bands that we admire. She told me how The Amplifires formed, and talked about her local music scene.  She comes from an area that has given us a lot great music through the years. Bands like ABC, Human League, Def Leppard, Arctic Monkeys and Pulp are all local to Sharon.  It is nice to see how her band fits into this musical tradition. She told me about their whirlwind tour of the US back in 2009, and how great it felt to have audiences singing her lyrics back to her. We talked about their first album "Fire on the Moon" which came out in 2008, as well as their new single "Fantasy Bride". You can find the new song and much of their earlier work on iTunes.  Please check it out. I downloaded it, and have been playing it a lot over the past week. You can learn more about Sharon and the band at http://amplifires.co.uk/ and http://www.myspace.com/theamplifiresuk . Send a message, and tell her what you thought of the interview!

Episode 014 - Jordan White

I recently sat down with singer/songwriter Jordan White. We met up at my favorite restaurant, Bubba's Pot Belly Stove, in Quakertown PA. This is my first interview at a busy place around dinner time, so please pardon some of the background conversations. I personally feel like it adds to the ambience.  It is like you are out to dinner with Jordan and I. Jordan started out by making me jealous in his description of a day in his life (hint..it involves sleeping in). I found that Jordan and I have a lot in common. We traded stories about being inspired by our parents' record collections, and some of his earliest musical influences. He told me about some of his career highlights, as well as the time he spent on American Idol. It was great to hear some behind the scenes stories from that show. Please visit Jordan's website to learn more about him (www.jordanwhitemusic.com).  He gave me a cd of some of his music, and it is great!  He is a very talented musician, and I have a feeling he will be making music for many years to come.

Episode 013 - Bev Conklin

Bev "BC" Conklin has been a fixture on the blues scene for close to 20 years. She is a very powerful singer, and an inspiration to many aspiring blues artists. She was kind enough to invite me to her house one Sunday morning to talk about her life and music.  We built a quick and easy rapport, and we talked for an almost an hour before I hit record on my mic!  When the interview started, Bev shared the journey that got her where she is today.  She told me about her travels all over the world, and finally settling in the Lehigh Valley. We also talked about her foundation, The Women's Blues Alliance, and her involvement in many weekly jams in the area.  She also talked through her balancing act of professional day job and working musician.  She has been doing both for 20 years, and she likes to stay busy.  She and her band have a very active performance schedule.  The day that we met she was preparing for a 7 hour jam!  Please check out her website for additional details and show dates (www.thebccombo.com).  I hope to meet with her again very soon!

Episode 012 - Chris Thomas King

I was honored to conduct a phone interview with Grammy Award winning musician Chris Thomas King.  He has a new album coming out on 10/4/11 called Antebellum Postcards.  He not only shared a lot of the stories behind the songs, he also gave me the history behind many of the standards that he covered.  This is music that got a lot of people through some tough times in their life, and he is doing his part to ensure that these songs can do the same for people today. We spent over an hour talking about his music, his career, and his movie roles.  Mr. King was kind enough to send me the album before we spoke, and it is incredible.  He has a way of really painting a picture with his words and music.  There is a lot of meaning in his song selection, and he tells me all about it. You'll have to wait just a few more weeks to hear the album, but it will be worth the wait!  Meanwhile this interview can serve as a companion to that album, and hold you over until it gets here. Learn more about him at www.christhomasking.com, and let him know that you heard about the new album from the Artist Connection Podcast!
