Episode 057 - AudioBlue

AudioBlue is a musician based out of Dallas, Texas. He had so many great experiences to share over the course of our conversation. He started out in London, moved to Los Angeles with one of his early bands, and eventually settled in Texas. He is very talented, and we talked about how comfortable he is writing, performing, and producing music. His parents were both professional musicians, and were very influential in his musical journey. He is carrying on that tradition by supporting his daughter in local gigs around town. AudioBlue and I have a lot in common with our musical influences and the bands that we enjoyed early in our lives. He allowed me to include two of his original songs with this episode. He recorded them in his home studio. The production sounds amazing and the songs are solid. You can hear more of his music at http://soundcloud.com/audioblue. He posts a lot of music there and is very receptive to listener feedback. You can also learn more at  http://www.reverbnation.com/audioblue. AudioBlue is an artist to keep on your radar. He has some exciting things planned for this year and I am hoping he comes back to share it on my show when it is completed. Enjoy!

Episode 056 - Stewart Kenny

I recently called over to Ireland to speak with singer/songwriter Stewart Kenny. We had a great conversation about life in Dublin, his influences, and his career as a professional musician. His father had a huge impact on his life, and we talked about how he continues to influence his songwriting today. Stewart starting writing songs at a very young age, and we talked about how his approach has changed over time. We also talked about the internet, and how recent partnerships have made him a very busy man. We also shared stories about being fathers ourselves, and how that plays a major role in our lives. I have a feeling that you are going to hear a lot more about Stewart in the coming weeks and months. He was nice enough to allow me to play two of his songs on this episode. Episode 054 - JKLN HYPODIVE

JKLN is the singer in the New York City based band HYPODIVE. We talked about how the band was formed, her influences, and her background. She told me about growing up in small town Virginia and her move to Los Angeles, CA. She eventually headed back east and settled in NYC. We discussed the early days of HYPODIVE, the importance of the internet in staying connected with her fans, and what it's like to be a female vocalist in an all male band. She had some great insights into what that is like for her. The HYPODIVE album is available at iTunes, and I encourage you to buy it. I did, and I love it. You can learn more about the band at www.hypodive.com. If you reach out, please let them know that you heard about them on the show. Enjoy!

Episode 053 - Jesse Gress

I recently had the opportunity to speak with musician Jesse Gress. I have been aware of him for many years through his work with Todd Rundgren. I would go to see them perform whenever they came through town, and Todd would always introduce him as a "local guy". Little did I know how local he was to me. We were actually born in the same hospital, and that was just the start. He shared so many great memories that he had of his early days here in Bethlehem, PA. He has a fantastic memory for names and dates, and it was a lot of fun for me to hear his stories. I also learned about his extensive work in transcribing music and his contribution to many of the guitar books that I bought in the 80's. Please visit Jesse at his website http://www.jessegress.com/ to learn more about him and check out all of the books that he has for sale there. Enjoy the interview!

Episode 052 - Joe Lynn Turner

Joe Lynn Turner is the dictionary definition of "rock star". I have been a fan of his work since the early 80's, and it was an honor to speak with him. I have great memories of wearing out copies of the albums that he made with Rainbow. It is such incredible music, and it had a huge impact on me. He told me stories from his days with the band Fandango, his time with Rainbow, and working with Yngwie Malmsteen. The album that came out of that collaboration, "Odyssey", remains one of my favorites from that period. We also talked about the music business, and the role of Mtv in the early days. Joe's latest project is the third Sunstorm album. It is called "Emotional Fire" and is about to be released on Frontiers Records. This episode starts out with a track from that album called "Never Give Up". If you are not familiar with Joe's work, this track gives you a taste. I encourage you to dig deeper into this man's catalog of music. It is quite extensive. You can also learn more at http://www.joelynnturner.com/. I hope that you enjoy the conversation as much as I did. Joe is a true legend, and a very nice guy. If you reach out to him, tell him Matt sent you!

Episode 051 - Steph Paynes Lez Zeppelin

Steph Paynes is the guitar player and founder of Lez Zeppelin. I bought their first album back in 2007, and have been a fan ever since. In my introduction, I make reference to Lez Zeppelin as being a "tribute band". I struggled with that introduction right up until I hit "record" for the interview. To me, they are so far beyond that in terms of attention to detail and overall passion for the music that they are playing, but so much of their press references that label. Looking back, I am glad that I started that way, because it gave Steph a chance to set the record straight and really address her feelings about it. We also talked about her musical influences and the recording process that they use to get that truly authentic sound. Steph and her band mates live every note of the music that they play, and it translates well in their live shows and recorded music. You can learn more about them at http://www.lezzeppelin.com/. Steph told me about her experiences working as a journalist for NME in London, and the benefits of understanding the music business from both sides.  I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. If you reach out to Steph, tell her that you heard her at the Artist Connection Podcast!
